Few filmmakers have achieved household-name status. David Lynch, who passed away in January of this year, is one of them. He rightfully earned this distinction by creating an unparalleled cinematic experience. From his first film, Eraserhead, onward, Lynch delved into the hidden, dark, and distorted layers of bourgeois reality. His cinema offered a journey into American culture as filtered through his feverish mind. As his personal journey evolved, Lynch presented us with new and more complex ways of perceiving reality, dismantling the false sense of security and peace fostered by a naïve gaze. Above all, Lynch gave the viewer a brilliant, alluring, and daunting abundance of images and atmosphere—tensions between the sweet and the poisonous, the colorful and the disturbing. This was where his main strength lay: his films offered a surprising sensory experience, evoking intense emotions and feelings. This month's program is yet another opportunity, certainly not the last, to enjoy his unique films.
Eraserhead
David Lynch's first feature-length film - his final project in film school - which grew to cult proportions and achieved critical acclaim after Elephant Man and Blue Velvet. A surrealistic film about a strange young man who sports a very large pompadour.
