This nonfiction film is devoted to two great Russian artists. Rather than focusing on the history of the mundane, everyday friendship between Chekhov and Levitan, the film highlights the affinity of their creative endeavors and the interplay of their similar, yet strikingly different, personalities. What the filmmakers offer the viewer is no idyll: it is a world full of nuance and contradiction, revealed against the backdrop of the era, while simultaneously uncovering the subtlest peculiarities of these two great creators. The cross-pollination of their creative methods and the interconnection of the two geniuses form the central motif of the film.
