The Zapatista Army’s uprising against the Mexican government ended in surrender in 1994. Yet, the social and political ideas of the movement, especially the active role women played in shaping it, continue to resonate deeply among the indigenous communities of Chiapas. This film, made by a member of the Tzotzil tribe, offers a personal and intimate look at the women close to her, who have taken control of both their families and local economies. Facing traumatic memories of a violent past, they work to restore their identity, reclaim their land, and rebuild their strength. The result is a candid and inspiring story of survival, cultural resistance, healing, and empowerment.
