The Forbidden Room

At the beginning of this film, a potbellied, satin robe-clad man instructs us on the history and significance of bathing. We then proceed to a submarine, whose crew is in trouble; a lumberjack saving a beautiful maiden from the red wolves; a neurosurgeon digging deep into the brain of an insane patient; a murderer impersonating his victims; seductive skeletons causing mayhem; and a woman in trauma on the express train from Berlin to Bogota.

Guy Maddin's film, co-directed with Evan Johnson, is an ode to the long-lost films of the silent era, an electric homage to classic cinema. The Canadian master gathered an impressive cast, including Mathieu Almaric, Charlotte Rampling, and Geraldine Chaplin, to create a chaotic, nightmarish atmosphere, an erotic and kaleidoscopic symphony which takes us sky high, down to the depths and around the world. The stirring images, impressive soundtrack, and twisted plotlines merge to create a unique, multilayered viewing experience.
