1936. The Popular Front may have won the elections, but for Pigoil, there’s little to celebrate—his club has closed, his wife has left, and his son has been taken from him. After a period of despair, he decides to take control of his life and reopen the club. A young singer helps turn it into a success, but soon faces tempting new opportunities. Christophe Barratier offers a nostalgic look at a pivotal moment in 20th-century France, in a film that pays tribute to the warm, music-filled cinema of the era and celebrates its working-class heroes. As in Les Choristes, Barratier strikes the right emotional tone, delivering a moving and evocative experience.
