England, WWII. Military bomb disposal expert Sammy Rice loses his leg during the War and becomes an alcoholic. His girlfriend has to balance his addictions, his desperation, and his sense of purpose. When new bombs are discovered on British shores, Sammy is asked to diffuse them. The Small Back Room is one of Powell and Pressburger's lesser-known films and has only recently received a new restoration. But this is a mature and excellent drama that deals in a seasoned way with self-fulfillment, depression, and relationships. The Noir cinematography and the measured performances give the film a quiet impact that gradually builds up to the climax. The Small Back Room is a smart and elegant film that is not to be missed.
