When Sofie falls in love with a handsome painter, her parents object to the marriage. No good Jewish family wants a gentile in their mix. They shortly marry her off, and she becomes pregnant. Her spontaneous life style changes drastically into that of a well-known and frustrating pattern. Sofie is Liv Ullmann's directorial debut - known for her acting under the baton of Ingmar Bergman. Indeed, she learned many qualities from the master - both in the design of the family drama and in the psychological volume dedicated to the development of the characters. But this is not Bergman's film - Ullmann tells us a female story, which deals with the shackles of tradition - Jewish, family - and the price of these restraints.
