The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis

At the end of 1935, poet Ricardo Reis returns to Portugal. In his bed, he entertains Lidia, but his soul aches for the tumultuous Marcenda. His nights are frequented by the legendary writer Pessoa, who is on his way to the world of the dead. An adaptation of the novel by Saramago, which, thanks to the magnificent black-and-white cinematography and depiction of political tensions, brings to the screen a well-crafted period drama.
