Among the hundreds of thousands of villages abandoned after the collapse of the USSR is the small island of Ostrov. Once a thriving fishing island, new restrictions have left the remaining residences no gas nor electricity, no legal jobs, no doctors nor policemen. In this dystopian atmosphere, Ivan and his family try to survive and imagine a better future. Risking his life and freedom, he goes out to sea to fish illegally and hopes that the letters he sends to Putin will be helpful. While all the younger generation wants is to leave this godforsaken place.
