In Part 3 of the Welcome in Vienna trilogy: Where to and Back, Freddy Wolff and George Adler are Viennese Jews who emigrated to the USA in 1938, and as members of the US army, were sent back to Western Europe in 1945. Freddy eventually returns to his home in Vienna, but he is no longer sure that he belongs there after 1938. He wants to return to the US, but at the last moment, he changes his mind.
