In 1980s Italy, 17-year-old Elio spends the summer vacation at his family’s villa, with his French mother and American father, who is a professor of archeology and art history. They are joined by Oliver (Armie Hammer), his father’s teaching assistant, a handsome man who stirs unfamiliar feelings in young Elio. The two form a passionate relationship, as they bond over their lively sexuality, shared Jewish heritage and the breathtaking landscapes of rural Italy. The latest film by Luca Guadagnino (I am Love) is a masterful and moving cinematic adaptation of André Aciman’s novel. Since its screening earlier this year at Sundance and the Berlin Festival, the film received a long line of rave reviews and accolades, and was also recently mentioned as one of the leading films in the upcoming Academy Award season. “Guadagnino recreates Elio’s life-changing summer with such intensity that we might as well be experiencing it first-hand. It’s a rare gift that earns him a place in the pantheon alongside such masters of sensuality as Pedro Amodóvar and François Ozon” (Peter Debruge, Variety).
