France, 1940. Jean Chevalin is a small-time, timid conman who never intended to desert the army—he’s simply scared. Eventually, he returns home, unsure how to fix the chaos around him. As the Nazis close in on France, he realizes his usual tricks won’t work this time. In a desperate attempt to save his wife and eight-year-old son, he devises a risky plan: he changes his name and pretends to be Jewish, hoping this will help them escape to the free zone. Caught up in a series of unforeseen events, the family discovers that solidarity and empathy are far more complex and difficult than they imagined. As the situation grows increasingly dire, Jean must find the courage to do what’s right.
