Seven years after The Set-Up, Robert Wise returned to the boxing ring with Somebody Up There Likes Me, the story of legendary world champion Rocky Graziano, from his violent youth in Little Italy to the heights of fame. Realistic settings and Joseph Ruttenberg’s striking black-and-white cinematography keep the film from slipping into melodrama, while Paul Newman delivers a powerful performance as a man for whom violence is both a means of escape and a way of engaging with the world.
