Israel 1993 | 117 minutes | Hebrew

Director, Eran Riklis’s blockbuster hit brought to the big screen the story of the rise and fall of Zohar Argov, aka ‘The King’ – Israel’s all-time greatest Middle Eastern folk singer. The film chronicles Argov’s life from the moment he first broke out as a singer, throughout his meteoric rise to fame and the evolution of his musical genre which, hitherto, had been unceremoniously snubbed by the cultural establishment, and all the way to his becoming a mainstream household name, his drug addiction, his arrests, the breakup of his family – and finally, his downfall and tragic death. The film soundtrack is packed full of Argov’s greatest hits, including The Flower in my Garden (‘haperach begani’), Lonesome (‘badad’), and A Sea of Tears (‘yam shel dma’ot’). Zohar took home two Ophir awards: one for Best Soundtrack, and the other, in the Best Lead Actor category that went to Shaul Mizrahi.
The film's restoration was carried out with the support of the Mifal Hapais.
