Yasuko, Song of Days Past

Yasuko, Song of Days Past centers on one of early twentieth-century Japan’s cultural myths: the romantic triangle between pioneering poet Chūya Nakahara, actress Yasuko Hasegawa, and future critic Hideo Kobayashi. Such a story could easily descend into a clash of egos and prodigious talents struggling to find their way. Director Kichitaro Negishi, however, approaches the drama with a classical sensibility, placing Yasuko at its heart. Through Suzu Hirose’s exceptional performance, her rise to prominence is rendered both compelling and deeply moving.
