Andrés Roca Rey is a star matador. Director Albert Serra follows him through a series of bullfights, capturing not only the intense moments in the ring but also quieter times—traveling with fellow matadors after a fight and preparing for the next one at the hotel. The film uses cinema to explore the core of this world: its cruelty, beauty, masculinity, ritual, camaraderie, and fear. Without interviews or narration, the camera patiently observes Roca Rey and the bulls in long, immersive shots. Though it may sound harsh or slow, the film is gripping and powerful, mesmerizing with its raw intensity. It won the top prize at the 2024 San Sebastián Festival and is one of the standout films of the year. Don’t miss it. (Note: Contains graphic bullfighting scenes; not recommended for sensitive viewers.)
